Hi Sue, Randy. I remember playing twenty questions with Luke (and Randy) back in his cub scout days.
Me: is it alive (or dead)?
Luke: Both
Randy: Both? How can it be both?
Me: Is it a robot?
Turns out it was one of Luke's favorite battle bots. He wanted to be a computer games tester when he grew up. Sounds like he pretty much knew all along where he wanted to go with his dreams. He lived a full, if far too short, life.

My sincere condolences to the Veenhuis family.
Randy and Sue were such good neighbors to our parents and their kids were fun to watch playing in the yard. You have always had a special place in our hearts for the warmth and friendship you have shown our family over the years.
Our hearts are with you now.

Dear Veenhuis family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Luke’s death. It is unimaginable what you must be going through during this difficult time. Luke was such a smart, kind-hearted, and caring person. He was a mentor to many students including myself that we could look up to and learn from. Luke and I were part of the same research group at UW-Whitewater. I remember a few summers ago we even interned together at the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC. We got to know each other fairly well and talked career aspirations. He wanted to pursue AI research further and he even convinced me to pursue a master’s degree to do just that. Looking back on it, I would have likely procrastinated getting my degree and wouldn’t be in the position I am now in my career if it weren’t for his mentorship. He will be missed by many including myself; I can’t begin to imagine how much you will. The positive impact he made on me and the lives of others he influenced will live on.
Sincerely,
Evan Reilly

Thank you for sharing that, Evan. Those are the kinds of things we love to hear about Luke. We hope to establish a college scholarship fund in Luke’s name just so that his memory can live on and keep encouraging others to pursue their dreams. Thank you so much.

My sincerest condolences for Luke's family at this time. I had Luke in several classes (undergraduate and graduate). Luke had a very positive attitude and greeted all with a big smile. We were all proud of Luke's academic achievements. Luke will be missed by many and may you always feel his love and pride.

My deepest condolences to Veenhuis's family. May memories with Luke help you all during this difficult time. Luke was an integral part of my research group at UW-Whitewater from 2015-2019 when he graduated. We knew him as a smart, funny, caring, always positive, and later on trusted friend and colleague. During his short time on earth, he touched many lives positively, mine included. Rest in peace Luke. You are missed dearly.
