Obituary of Ronald Wangerin

Ronald "Coach� Wangerin, 84, died peacefully at home Tuesday, April 21st 2015, surrounded by friends and family. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 7, 1931, Ron graduated from Whitefish Bay High School, earned an undergraduate degree from UW-Lacrosse, and a Masters of Education and PhD from the University of Michigan. He married Judith Koeppen in 1953 and moved his family to Fort Atkinson in 1966, when he accepted a teaching position at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. Ron coached both the Men�s and Women�s Tennis programs at UW-Whitewater and earned an impressive 48 Conference Championships during his career. A professor Emeritus, Ron also established the well-regarded Warhawk Tennis Camps and was inducted into the UW-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Ron served his country as Commander in the United States Naval Air Reserves for over 24 years. He was an active member of his community serving as: a Boy Scout Pack Leader, a WIAA Swimming/Diving Official, member of the Wisconsin Tennis Association, past presidents of the Fort Atkinson Swim Team and Fort Atkinson Tennis Association, a Red Cross instructor and volunteer, and served on the Vestry of St. Peter�s Episcopal Church. Ron is survived by a son, Douglas (Shelly) and a daughter, Heidi (Brian) Saunders, both of Fort Atkinson. He was a loving and supportive grandfather to Aaron, Nicholas, Kailey, Paige, Derek and Jillian. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith and son, David. Visitation will be held at Nitardy Funeral Home on Sunday, April 26th from 4pm -7 pm. A commemorative Mass will be held at St. Peter�s Episcopal Church at Noon on Monday, April 27th. The family will receive visitors from 11am-12pm, prior to the service. Those who wish to express their sympathy may wish to consider contributing to the �UW-W Foundation � Indoor Tennis� project or by a memorial gift to St. Peter�s Episcopal Church.
