We are so sorry to hear about Gordon's passing. He was always one of my favorite uncles and I so enjoyed seeing him. We stopped to see him summer of 2009 and 2010. Wish we could have made it to WI this past summer. During our last visit he shared some stories from when he was younger and even showed us a picture of himself as a young man. He laughed and laughed. My favorite part of always being with him is that he and my Dad, Merle, were brothers and they had very similar mannerisms. When I was younger the two of them would try to fool me as to who was my Dad. It still makes me chuckle. We even talked about the physical similarities. He was a fine man, wonderful husband and will be missed by many. Wished I would have known earlier in the week because my husband and I would have gone to the funeral.

Doris, I am so sorry to hear Uncle Gordon has passed away. I was just thinking of him this week with his birthday coming. I will miss visiting with him. This is a hard time for you and my prayers are with you. I understand how difficult this time is as my husband died in August. Take care of yourself.

Of the many blessings I received by being raised in Fort, one of the greatest was having Gordon Simonsen as next door neighbor. It's an old line, but truly, I think his picture should go next to the word "neighbor" in the dictionary. I still bear the scar of wrongfully playing on the site when their new house was being built on the old icehouse site near the end of E. Milwaukee. I'm sure that living next to the three rambunctious Sanders boys (and friends) could be very trying, but I just can't remember him without a smile and cheerful disposition. Of course we got our gasoline, car repairs and furnace oil from him! The garden plots on our two lots abutted each other and, although having differing vegetable tastes, harvest sharing was the norm. I remember the delight we got when Gordy got a snowplow blade for his yard tractor and did the front sidewalk "shoveling" from the end of Milwaukee Ave on our side of the street at least as far as Zida St. Saved a lot of work for us boys! When my dad passed and we kids left home, Gordy would "come by for a chat" with my mother and, I think, surruptitiously check to see that she and everything with the house was okay. Gordy spoiled us, and I have never in my 68 year, 10 home life encountered a better neighbor! Special condolences to Rich and Sue.

On losing Gordy from this earth I realized I am now without any uncles. I did so many things from riding shotgun with him in his jeep clearing snow on Hamerson's Pond to going pheasant hunting with him west of town as a teenager. He always had a quip or joke and seemed always in great humor, always somthing good to say about everyone with a twinkle in his eye. Kindness like his can't be bought or traded. I didn't see much of him in recent years but will feel his passing as a great loss just the same--104 is a good long ride here on terra firma and thank you Doris, for the love, attention and devotion you gave him. Doris, we were sad to hear of the passing of Gordy! He was a great friend of our families and us, he was certainly a tried and true friend to all that knew him. I remember many fun times playing golf with Dad and Gordy at the Mounds or sitting in your sun room and talking to Gordy. He had a infectious laugh. We are so sorry that we have not seen him over the last few years as we have not been back to Fort many times since Peg and Everett passed away.
Regards,
Richard & Karen Hein
