James Colbert

Obituary of James Joseph Colbert

James J. Colbert

1940 – 2024

James (Jim) Joseph Colbert, 83, of Cottage Grove, Wis., passed away on March 5, 2024, at Alden Estates of Jefferson, Wis. after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born in Sparta, Wis. to parents James and Dorothy Colbert, Jim was a true man of music. He delighted audiences around Central Wisconsin with his musicianship, performing in polka bands as early as his teens. Later in life, he joined the Fort Atkinson Community Band, dedicating nearly two decades to sharing his passion for music with the public. His love for the piano began at the tender age of 7, and his skillful performances captivated listeners throughout his life.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army for six years, embodying the values of honor, courage, and commitment. In his post-army years, he embraced the thrill of flight as a hobby pilot.

In addition to his many talents and military service, Jim had a distinguished career in the business world. He worked tirelessly as an accountant, plant manager, and purchasing professional at various companies, including Oscar Mayer, FDL Foods, and Orbis until his retirement in 2007. He also served as an instructor at Madison Area Technical College.

Jim graduated with pride from P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point, Wis., and later earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Beyond his accomplishments, Jim will be remembered for his sharp wit, sense of humor, and remarkable intelligence.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 50 years, Maggie; his loving sons, James, Steve, and Kevin; three brothers and their families; and a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rest in peace, Jim. Your melody will echo in our hearts forever.
