Sorry to learn of the passing of my high school basketball coach and athletic director Don Gruber. I was the manager of the Fort Atkinson Blackhawk basketball program from 1976-1979. Don never treated me like just a manager. I was just as important as the players and at times was even treated better than any manager would expect. You were a great coach and mentor during my high school development years and as athletic director I'm sure responsible for spearheading the special honor I received at my senior athletic awards night. Thank you so much for the opportunity to be part of something special in my life and I will truly miss you.

So Sorry to hear of Coach Gruber's passing. It was an honor for me to get to know him. Prior to coming to Fort Atkinson in 1999 as Superintendent of Schools, I was already well aware of Coach Gruber from my previous role as Principal of Beloit Memorial High School. Upon hearing I was moving to Fort Atkinson, veteran coaches who had competed against Don, made me well aware of his reputation. I remember first meeting him when he was ushering at St. Joe's at a Sunday mass. From that point on I always look forward to when I would see him, often at sporting events supporting our BLACKHAWKS and cheering for his grandchildren Nicole and Tanner. His influence as an educator, athletic administrator, and coach is LEGENDARY. He was not only a superb HALL OF Coach, but even a better person with rock solid ethics who's advice one cherished. Legions and legions of student-athletes are better for having crossed paths with Coach Gruber. With deepest sympathy and blessings to his family!

My favorite teacher! I was in the Waterloo HS Class of 1966. We dedicated our yearbook to Mr Gruber - he had served as our class advisor for all 4 years. My brother, Ron Holzhueter, was a starter on Waterloo’s 1964 State Basketball Tournament team. (No divisions then & only 8 teams went from the entire state.) Ron revered Mr Gruber & viewed him as a role model as Ron taught and coached at Madison Memorial. They remained in contact until Ron passed in 2019.
