Dear Lois and family, It wasn't until I received the University of Iowa College of Education Winter Alumni Magazine that I read of Paul's passing. I have never forgotten the year we spent together as teachers and coaches in Clarinda, Iowa. The years were 1957-58. Playing basketball on Sundays with the town team, practicing on the trampoline, shooting with the bow and arrow, etc. and learning that Lois was pregnant with your first child, it was a great year of memories. What can I say other than Paul was a wonderful ordinary man who did extra-ordinary things.

I am so sorry about the loss of your Dad. Your dad was my special Ed. Advisor when I started at UWW. He is the one that recommended I teach early childhood special needs kids. I am in my 29th year of teaching just that. He was a huge advocate for those with special needs.
I also remember seeing your dad watching and playing tennis. He was a great supporter of all WHS athletes.
Prayers and thoughts are with all of you,
Robin Schwab

Dr. Lauritzen was my mentor, my advocate, and my friend through my studies at UW-W and though at a distance, has remained such throughout my life. He inspired me as a special education undergrad, but also taught me to go further with my love of biking, appreciate more fully the gift of nature through his woods, and have fun playing a prank or two within the department. My work in special education today is influenced by him and will forever be. My deepest condolences to all of his family, and my thanks for sharing him with so many of us through the years. Paul will live on in his spirit of goodness and his gift of seeing the best in everyone.

I owe my entire career to Dr. Paul. UW-Whitewater needs to name a hall or classroom setting after him. He was a great man. I sobbed at the news of his passing. Our sincere condolences to Lois and family. I had the privilege of spending a great deal of time with Dr. Paul inside and outside the classroom. I would not be a CEO of an organization that serves people with disabilities without his instruction, encouragement and support. God bless you Dr. Paul. Rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to you Lois, and Paul's entire family. Paul was a great mentor to me during my years as a student in Whitewater and beyond. I'm grateful that, after many, many years of corresponding only through yearly Christmas cards, something possessed me to make a surprise visit this summer to see Paul. I was greeted by his usual dry sense of humor, and then the invite to take a trip to the woods. It was such a delite, and a memory that will last a lifetime (along with the pine tree that he insisted I take to plant in my yard!) Paul has definitely left a great impression on my life, as I know he has in countless others. Gods Blessing to his family.

Every time I saw Paul, whatever the occasion, he was full of energy for one good cause or another. He was a champion of healthy kids, healthy eating, healthy rivers, and probably lots more. I still have a book he loaned me, "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan, which I would like to keep in my library as a remembrance. My sympathy to Lois and the entire family.

I knew Dr. Lauritzen as a neighbor growing up
in Whitewater and later as a student at U. W.
Whitewater. I will always remember and be grateful
for how he took a personal interest with students in the
special education department. I especially will remember the
mentoring and guidance he provided to me at a time in my life
when I really needed it. I will also always remember his enthusiasm
for bicycling and how he got me interested in that. After leaving
Whitewater and as I have progressed through my professional career
I never forgot the mentoring and support Dr. Lauritzen gave to me. He truly was a special person who will be missed and my condolences go out to
his family at this time.

Paul will be remembered fondly as a good neighbor, an apple picker bar none, an all weather biking enthusiast, and a person who encouraged kids of all ages to "get out and play"! From visits to the farm to shooting hoops in the driveway or watching Paul and friends operate the apple press, you just know he enjoyed life, and was happy to share his joys with others!

I had the honor of being in one of the first group of Special Education graduates from UWWhitewater. Dr. Lauritzen was instrumental in my desire to become special education teacher . I have fond memories of dr Lauritzen, Burt, Dorothy and of course Florence . In my opinion it was the best department on campus. Dr. Lauritzen made sure everyone gave 100% no matter what they were doing. I am sad to read of his passing, he was one of the Whitewater elite!
