Obituary of Walter J. Korth

Walter Korth, age 91, passed away peacefully Wed., Jan. 20, 2016. He was born Feb. 24, 1924, to Emil and Hattie (Drescher) Korth at home near Granton, Wis. Walter graduated from Granton High School in 1942, attended Airplane Mechanics School in Eau Claire, and enlisted in the Air Force in Dec. 1942. His military training included basic training at St. Petersburg and Miami, FL; airplane mechanics training at Gulfport, MS; B-24 Bomber training at Ypsilanti, MI; armament school at St. Paul, MN; and flight training at Tucson, AZ, and Pueblo, CO, where he was assigned to a Bomber crew. Walter was stationed at Attlebridge Air Force Base in England and flew 35 missions over Germany during World War II. He was awarded four oak-leaf clusters and three bronze stars for meritorious achievement in combat. Walter married Violet Foemmel May 22, 1946. He worked at a cheese factory and as a car mechanic before he and his wife moved to his parents� farm in York Center in 1949 to farm with his father and brother until his parents sold the farm in 1951. In 1952 he and his brother bought a farm in Jefferson County, farming together until 1975. He drove semi-truck for Simonson Oil Co. in Fort Atkinson for 28 years and for Vasby Grain Farms in Cambridge for 10 years. He then worked for J&L Tire in Johnson Creek. Walter was an active member of Willerup Methodist Church, Cambridge, since 1953. He served as trustee and ushered. Walter is survived by his wife; two children, Darrell (Peggy) Korth, Diane (Tim) Sullivan; five grandchildren, Jacob (Amy) Korth, Adam (Chasity) Korth, Luke (Melissa) Korth, Ryan (Kim) Sullivan and Brent (Toni) Sullivan; two great-grandchildren, Alice Violet Korth and Riley Pearl Sullivan; and two sisters, Eileen (Dwight) Crossman and Dorothy (Leonard) Meyer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbert (Alvina), and sister, Louise (Harlow) Henninger. Funeral services will be held at Willerup Methodist Church, 414 W Water St., Cambridge, on Mon., Jan. 25, 2016, visitation at 9:30 a.m. and services at 11:00 a.m. followed by Military Funeral Honors. The Nitardy Funeral Home, Cambridge, WI is assisting the family.
