Obituary of Clarence A. Langholff

Clarence A. "Cal" Langholff, age 102, of Fort Atkinson, WI passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at Wellington Meadows in Fort Atkinson. Clarence was born on February 26, 1907 in Fort Atkinson, WI, the son of Carl J. and Minnie (Sommers) Langholff.� He married Ida M. Zastrow in Cambridge, WI on June 4, 1927.� They celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary on June 4, 2005.� Ida passed away in 2005.� Upon graduation from Fort Atkinson High School in 1924, Cal went to Evanston, IL, to work at the Mumm Printing Company and also attended Northwestern University School of Journalism.� He later decided to discontinue studies at Northwestern and continued in printing.� In 1927, two weeks before he was married, he accepted a job at W. D. Hoard & Sons Co., Fort Atkinson, in the job printing department, where he worked for 45 years, the last 42 years as foreman of the typesetting department.� Cal retired in 1972.� Cal was lifetime member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, served on the church council for 6 years and also the board of elders, and other committees of that church.� He was a member of the St. Paul's Men's Club and a past member of Lakeside Lutheran Men's Club.� He was a member of the St. Paul's Bible Class, and served for many years on the Lutheran Chapel of the Air Board. Clarence was an active member of the Fort Atkinson Lions Club since 1944, over 60 years.� He served as president of the local club, 2 years as Zone Chairman and 1 year as Deputy District Gov. of the District.� In 1978 he was awarded the Distinguished Community Service Award by the local club and in 1990 he received the Melvin Jones Fellow award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service for the Lions International Foundation.� He had 58 years of perfect attendance at the local meetings. Since retiring in 1972, Cal had been active in Senior Citizens activities.� He served on the Jefferson County Commission on Aging for 12 years, including 2 years as a delegate from Jefferson County to the monthly meetings of the State Area Agency in Madison.� During his tenure on the commission he was able to get $27, 400 for a Senior Center from the state for Fort Atkinson that was offered to Jefferson County during that time.� He served on the Senior Center Board for many years in various capacities since its organization, and was elected to serve as an honorary member of the board in 2002. Clarence was elected charter president in 1974 of the local chapter of AARP, and served on various committees for many years, including the Board of Directors and Legislative Chairman.� In 1984, he was honored for many years of service to the local chapter and in 1992 he was awarded a Special Citation from the National Association for his many years of service to the local chapter and the local community. Before his heart surgery in 1982, Cal served for several years as an escort and member of the Fort Atkinson Hospital auxiliary.� He also served as a guide at the local Hoard Museum and Dairy Shrine and is a member of the Fort Atkinson Historical Society.� He was a past president of the Fort High School Alumni Association and served on the Board of Directors for many years. Surviving are one son: Kenneth (Emily) Langholff, Fort Atkinson; four grandchildren: Tom (Linda) Mumm, The Villages, Florida; Brenda (Andy) Ruzzin, Farmington Hills, Michigan;� Faith Schutters, Ava, Missouri; and Bruce (Laura) Langholff, Watertown, WI.� There are also 7 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Cal was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ida, on June 12, 2005; his daughter, Norma Jean Mumm, on July 6, 2006, and his sister, Marian Langholff of Fort Atkinson, on October 30, 2004.� Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2009 at 11:00AM at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fort Atkinson, with Rev. Michael Duncan and Rev. Paul Scharrer officiating.� Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Atkinson. �Friends may call from 4:30-7:30PM on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Nitardy Funeral Home, Fort Atkinson and after 10:00AM on Friday at the church until the services.
