Obituary of Osborne Roberts Jones

Osborne "Ozzie" Roberts JONES, age 85, of Mauston, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at Alden Estate of Countryside in Jefferson, WI. Osborne was born in Wild Rose, Wisconsin on July 31, 1925, the son of Charles and Barbara (Roberts) Jones. Osborne enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served from June 18, 1943 until February 2, 1946 as a gunner on a merchant ship, the SS Amos Throop. He landed at Normandy on D-Day 2, and later served at Ie Shima in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge in 1946, he re-enlisted on March 3, 1946 and served as a printer until his final discharge on January 9, 1948. Osborne started work at Madison Kipp in 1948 and later worked in the maintenance and security department for UW-Madison from 1956-1987. Osborne was an active member of the Mauston VFW Post #2114. Surviving are: Two Sisters: Mary L. Hartwig, Fitchburg, WI, and Blodwyn Cockrell, Portola, CA. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addtion he leaves many close friends at Colonial Manor in Mauston. Osborne was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles A. Jones and a sister Grace D. Rumpf. Graveside Services will be held at 10AM on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at the Caersalem Cemetery, Wild Rose, Wisconsin with military graveside rites. Those planning an expression may wish to consider a memorial to Caersalem Cemetery or the Mauston VFW Post #2114.
