Obituary of George Eugene Olson

George Eugene OLSON, age 82, of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Alden Estates of Countryside, in Jefferson, WI. George was born in Sparta, Wisconsin on May 31, 1929, the son of Ralph and Gertrude (Williams) Olson. He graduated from Sparta High School and attended UW-Madison on a ROTC Scholarship. He received a Bachelor of Science in Meat and Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1952. George served his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, receiving the Bronze Star for meritorious service as Port Officer in Kunsan, Korea. On June 17, 1955, George married Jean Grace Ruedy in Sparta, Wisconsin. George worked for Oscar-Mayer in Madison for 9 years. In 1964, George moved his family to Fort Atkinson where they built a home. He worked as pork procurement manager for Jones Dairy Farm in Fort Atkinson up until Jones Dairy Farm discontinued the slaughter line and then worked for 5 years at FDL Foods until 1991 when he retired. George was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Atkinson and served on the Board of Trustees. He was active in and served as a past president of the Fort Atkinson Lions Club, was past president of the Jefferson County Pork Producers, was a member of the Wisconsin Pork Producers, was a proud member and past president of the UW-Madison Alumni and served on the Board of Directors for the Koshkonong Mounds Country Club for many years. George also served as a judge for many local and regional hog shows, including the State Fair. He gave of his time to mentor others in the Agriculture Community. He and his wife enjoyed spending winters in Florida and George enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and golfing. Surviving are: Wife: Jean G. Olson, Verona, WI, Children: Eric Olson, Windsor, WI, Carrie (Bob) Lowery, Janesville, WI, and Jason (Marsha) Olson, Verona, WI, Four Grandchildren: Josh Lowery, Mallory Olson, Connor Olson and Anna Olson, Silbings: Bill (Abby) Olson, Sparta, WI, Bob (Joanne) Olson, Sparta, WI, and Morris (Edwina) Olson, Sparta, WI. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. George was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Marge Tischenor. Memorial Services will be held at 11:30AM on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Fort Atkinson with Rev. Russell Frees officiating.
