Elizabeth Haban

Obituary of Elizabeth Haban

Elizabeth Betty Haban of Fort Atkinson passed away peacefully at home on October 16, 2011 with family by her side.   She was born in Racine, WI on June 4, 1926, the daughter of Deray and Alberta (Kogler) Baker. Elizabeth was joined in Marriage with Frank Haban on October 6, 1945. Elizabeth is survived by three children, Enid Haban-Megahed of Madison, Erwin (Mary) Haban of Manitowoc, and Gloria Brunk of Jefferson; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim (Jean) Baker of Delavan, WI. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Frank, in 2009; a son, Glenn Haban; a grandson, Omar Megahed; a sister Audrey Klemme. After earning a B.S.degree in Chemistry at Ann Arbor Michigan 1947, she found her true passion in library science. She took as many courses as was offered in Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, WI and when they moved to Ft. Atkinson she became a research librarian at U.W. Whitewater until she retired. There she discovered genealogy and became a part of the Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society in 1994. She discovered that library science had little or nothing for genealogical libraries and made adjustments to the Dewey-Decimal System to fit the library to the user. She said, She had the most fun of her life. When asked about her college degree Mom would always say that it was un-important. What was important to her was her family, her books and her genealogy. Her favorite quote was:Home is where your story begins. Our favorite was: Having a place to go is Home, Having someone to Love is Family, Having both is a Blessing. We were very blessed. Elizabeths family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Laurel Rice and her team and staff at the U.W. Carbone Center for enabling her and us to have three bonus years; and to Rainbow Hospice for providing a comfortable passing. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:30 on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 314 Barrie St.,Fort Atkinson. The service will follow. Private burial will be October 24, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Atkinson. Memorials in Elizabeths memory may be made to the Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society or to Rainbow Hospice of Jefferson County. The Nitardy Funeral Home, Fort Atkinson is assisting the family
