Dear Steve,Scott, and Carla, I realize this is very late in coming but just today 7-31-13 I found out that "Doc" had passed away. The least I could do is send you this. I worked with Doc on a dairy in the early 70's. The farm was owned by Clark Dempsey an attorney from Whitewater, Wisc. Doc was the kindest, most qualified veterinarian I ever worked with. When I went home to Ohio and continued to Dairy I continued to stay in touch with him. Late in the evening we would talk and not once did I come away from a conversation with him that I didn't come away with more than I had when the conversation started. As we both got older I lost contact with him, but watched for his articles any chance I could. I miss those phone conversations and working with him. Respectfully, Mark F. Coffman (dairy farmer from Ohio)

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of the finest veterinarian in the Whitewater Area and Wisconsin we know of. His teaching and care of dairy cattle will never be forgotten by those that knew of him. Lee also possessed a fine eye for top Holstein Dairy cattle. Please carry on in his philosophy in your lives.

I rember "Doc" as friend as well as a good vet. I worked with him in 57 or 58 when he was the only vet in his practice. I often went with him when he went on a call. He was a personal friend of ours and was instrantal in helping me buy a farm, being a director at the bank. He was a personal friend and will be missed by our family. Dave Hack

Scott, Steve, and Carla,
We are so glad that we stopped two weeks ago and had a wonderful visit and lunch with Lee and Scott. How good to see the love and respect given to him by the staff at the health center and the townspeople who came to greet him!
My fondest memories of my Godfather were...his first wedding day when I finally had courage to walk down the aisle as his flower girl; summer visits when Steve and Scott were little; the day of my first wedding when Lee and Dick tried to steal the bride; and the day he took me to see his partnership cow in the cleanest, prettiest barn I had ever been in! Thank God for the message of Easter for we know he is in a better place with many loved ones--
both family and friends. Carol and Al

Steve, Scott, and Carla,
Just last Saturday at Iowa State University Homecoming, I visited with one of your father's fraternity brothers at the Alpha Gamma Rho House. I was one of the first veterinary students who spent a couple of months at the Whitewater Veterinary Clinic in 1972. Those eight weeks made a great impression on me and the way I practiced in Iowa following graduation. He will be missed by his family and friends. I am fortunate to have known him. My sincere sympathy.

Scott & family,
Doc Allenstein's Cowside Practice articles were an inspiration as a child and young adult. His method is what I've tried to emulate as I've stepped into those big shoes writing the column. It was a real treat to meet doc in 1987 and see his enthusiasm for the Veterinary program at UW. The smile in his eyes was evident then as he beamed over the potential of young people in the industry. That smile was still there the last time I saw him at AABP. He will be missed by all that knew him, but we are glad for the path he blazed that makes our journey easier.
