Obituary of June Alice Lounds

June Alice LOUNDS, age 85, of Cambridge, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully with her immediate family by her side on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Harbor House, in Wheeling, IL. June was born on the Carpenter Homestead in Town of Christiana, Dane County, Wisconsin on June 1, 1926, the daughter of Harlow and Aletta (Hanson) Carpenter. In her early years, she attended Carpenter Community School where she completed all her primary education. From there, she attended Edgerton High School where she met her future husband, Carl Lounds. She graduated from high school in 1944 and began her life-long education at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. Given the events of World War II, she left the university after two years and married Carl on February 15, 1946. They made their first home on the Carpenter Homestead. After the birth of her two children, she began her teaching career with an emergency post-war issued teaching certificate at the one-room school, Albion Prairie. She went on to teach at the Smithback School. During this time, however, June decided to return to school to complete her bachelor�s degree. She received her Bachelors of Education- Elementary Education Degree from UW-Whitewater in 1961 and then continued on to receive her Masters of Education-specializing in Exceptional Education from UW Whitewater in 1976. Upon completion of her Master�s of Science Degree, she began working in the field of exceptional education. Her first teaching experience was at a private school in Stoughton. She went on to teach Special Ed in the public classroom setting at Sun Prairie and finally to the Deerfield Public Schools. In 1989, she was awarded Deerfield Teacher of the Year. She later became a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the University of Wisconsin Madison Chapter, known for its commitment to publicly supported and universally available education. She was a retired member of Wisconsin Education Association Council after 38 years of teaching. Carl preceded June in death on January 6, 1998. June was an active member of the Rockdale Lutheran Church where she served as Choir Director for many years. She enjoyed singing, music, traveling, geneology, being an active member of the Rockdale Lutheran Church, the Carpenter�s Community Club, and the Koshkonong Prairie Historical Society. Her whole life was surrounded by learning and helping others to learn. �Surviving are her Children: Connie (Gregory) Weimer, Wheaton, IL, and John (Patricia) Lounds, Long Grove, Il, Grandchildren: Matthew (Laura Banaszak) Weimer, Steven (Christina) Weimer, Mark (Gabi) Lounds, and Jill (Oren Elbaz) Lounds, and Great-Grandchildren: Haley Weimer and Nicholas Lounds. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 11:00AM at the Rockdale Lutheran Church, Rockdale, Wisconsin with Rev. Richard Dowling officiating. Burial will follow at the Rockdale Lutheran Cemetery, and a luncheon will follow at the church. Friends may call from 4-7PM on Friday, November 11, 2011 at the Nitardy Funeral Home, Cambridge, WI and after 10 AM on Saturday at the church until the services.
