Obituary of Raymond Sanford Peterson

Raymond Sanford Peterson, age 93, of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Fairhaven Corporation in Whitewater, Wisconsin.   Raymond was born in Stoughton, Wisconsin on December 10, 1918, the son of Sanford and Emma (Hartwig) Peterson . He was a 1938 graduate of Fort Atkinson High School. He served in the National Guard from 1939 to 1940 and in the U.S.Army during WWII, serving five years in the South Pacific. On October 26, 1946, Raymond married Lola Frisk at the home of her parents in Fort Atkinson. Raymond worked for 25 years at General Motors in Janesville, Wisconsin retiring in 1984. Raymond was a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson, a life member of VFW Post #1879, a life member of American Legion Post #166, a life member of the Humane Society of Jefferson County, a member of the Humane Society of the United States, and the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the U.S. Raymond loved animals and was very active in animal rights causes. Surviving are his wife: Lola Peterson, Fort Atkinson, WI, Sister: Lois (David) Bielefeldt, Fort Atkinson, WI, Sisters-in-law: Gweneth Peterson, Brodhead, WI and Carol Peterson, Fort Atkinson, WI, and Marie Peterson, Fort Atkinson, WI and Brother-in-law: Gerald Mepham, Fort Atkinson, WI. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Dean (Mary), Donald, and Roger, and three sisters: Dorothy Herlitz, Helen Mepham, and Irene (Herman) Kraus. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fort Atkinson,Wisconsin with Rev. Michael Duncan and Rev. Paul Scharrer co-officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Friends may call after 10AM on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the church until the time of the service.
