Lucille Struss

Obituary of Lucille Helen Struss

Lucille Helen Struss went peacefully home to her Lord on June 29, 2012, at Rainbow Hospice Care Center, Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, following a brief illness. Born Helen Lucille Schmidt on December 29, 1916, Lucille grew up on her familys small dairy farm in Whitewater, Wisconsin, where she learned to drive teams of horses and tractors at a young age. She remembered fondly her years growing up with her two sisters, cousins and school friends, and the love of her father and mother. After graduating from Whitewater High School and working at the Green Shutters Restaurant, Lucille followed her sister Lorraine to Chicago, Illinois, to work in war-time industry. It was at Sentinel Radio assembling army field radios that she met Arthur Struss who she married in Whitewater, Wisconsin, on September 12, 1942. After living briefly in Chicago, Lucille and Arthur settled in Glenview, Illinois, where they operated Pleasant Lane Trailer Court for a number of years, hand-built two houses, and raised their four sons, Arthur, Roger, Steven and Ronald. Lucille was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a Cub Scout troop leader. She worked fifteen years in the cafeteria of Glenbrook South High School. Two years after the death of her husband Arthur in 1994, Lucille moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin, where she made many friends, and became active in community organizations and St. James Lutheran Church. She remained very active right up to her death, walking up to two miles every day to the store, the community center, or church. Everyone in town knew her as the lady in the orange safety vest motoring around town with her walker. From the time growing up on the farm until her death Lucille was an avid gardener; raising award winning roses in Glenview and a much admired wildflower garden in Cambridge. Lucille loved her Lord with all her heart and was a woman of compassion, always offering a listening ear and a word of encouragement or comfort. Her friends and family will miss her dearly, and will always remember her loving heart, strong hands, and independent spirit. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Helen (Kienbaum) Schmidt, her sisters Lorraine Wilde (Robert) and Hazel Daniels (Raymond), her husband Arthur, and her special friend Lester Jarlsberg. She is survived by her sons Arthur (Marilyn), Roger (Sandy), Steven (Laurie), and Ronald (Lisa); and by her eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, July 6, 2012 at St. James Ev. Lutheran Church, 413 E. North Street, Cambridge, WI with Rev. Jeffrey Schallert officiating. Burial will be in the Willerup Methodist Cemetery, Cambridge, WI. Friends may call after 10AM on Friday at the Church until the services. In lieu of flowers Lucille requested that memorials be made in her name to the charity of your choice. The Nitardy Funeral Home, Cambridge is assisting the family.
