GODSPEED HOWARD BORCHARDT
Ill miss Howard, not only for who he was, but for what his passing represents the end of an era, the loss of another member of The Greatest Generation and a farewell to a simpler and less cynical time.
Howard Borchardt was the living definition of a gentleman, but his gentleness was underpinned by great strength and character.
Since hearing of Howards passing, I often find myself thinking about the Borchardt family - Howard, Norma, Diane and my childhood pal, Jerry. I remember Howard the way I came to know him, as Jerry and I grew up together there in the lazy shade of Sleepy Hollow Road. They say it takes a village to raise children and there was no finer village than our neighborhood in the middle West in middle America in the middle of the 1960s and 70s. With Howards passing our little Lake Ripley family has lost a founding member.
You see, us kids as we used to say, werent just raised by our own parents, we were raised by the whole neighborhood and in that neighborhood Howard was the wise man the Solomon. He wasnt flamboyant - well, there was that orange BMW and the speedboat with the Mercury engine He was a quiet and unassuming man who didnt seek attention or make public speeches, but when he did have something to say everybody paid attention to Howard. There wasnt much he didnt know something about electricity, wiring, cars, motors, gardens and people if you were seeking advice or needed to know how something complex worked you went to see Howard. He didnt talk about things he simply got things done.
Howard served his country in the Air Force and continued as a reservist for years, something that most of us knew very little about because he never boasted of his own accomplishments. He just worked hard and raised his family alongside one of the most capable women Ive ever known - Norma. Theirs was an amazing partnership. Norma is tireless a nurse who took care of the whole County and a wife and homemaker and mother not necessarily in that order. She set the bar so high for running a household and getting things done that most folks wouldnt even try to compete. It didnt surprise me at all to learn that she took care of Howard right to the last.
Ill always treasure the many happy moments and memories that were shared at the Borchardts house including sitting on Santas knee at their neighborhood Christmas Party.
My thoughts and prayers remain with the Borchardt family. May you find continued comfort in the knowledge that Howards wisdom and love will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to have known him.
With warm regard,
Greg

Diane and Norma - Diane I received your email while up in Door Co. We have been thinking of you and praying and will continue! This is a beautiful writeup about your dad. He was a blessing to many - and will continue being a blessing now that he has gone on to be with the Lord. I remember the times bringing when we were able to take mom and dad out to visit your mom and dad - or visiting with them at the Nursing Reunion luncheons. It was always with good memories. Now your dad meets up with mom and dad once again. Dad would tell me that they would double date with your mom and dad because your dad had the car and my dad didn't! I love it! God bless you all. Love to all - Jane (Meicher) and Jim Adams
