Linda, Our medic Fred Paddleford was transferred from A Btry to C Btry where Shell was at Fire Base Bastogne. Shortly after Hamburger Hill, Bastogne took incoming. Doc Paddleford was KIA and 17 wounded. Shell and the men of C Btry went through a hard year in 1969. A Btry and C Btry were always a few miles from each other and many times fired to protect each other. Shell, Neal Schwartz and many others were exposed to the rigors of the A Shau Valley. May GOD be with you in your time of loss. Shell is back inside the WIRE and safe again.

Although we probably never realized that we knew each other, we had crossed paths far away from home. While you, Merlin, were in "Charlie Battery of the 1st Battalion, 83 Artillery", Viet Nam, I was TDY from "Bravo Battery" and served with you there for a spell. That makes us brothers. Rest well my brother, and my deep hearted condolences to your family and friends.

Sorry to hear of Merlin's passing. I got to meet and talk to Merlin at the last 1/83rd's reunion and then I called him in the hospital during his last stay. We talked for a good 1/2 hour to a hour. We share a few stories. It is funny how much we had in common. It was a pleasure talking to him and I would have like to got to know him a bit better. Quite a fellow. I know he will be deeply missed. Be strong and take care.

Linda,
May I extend my sympathy to you and your family. Butch & I had some good memories of our trips to the VVA state council meetings.
I will not be able to attend either the visitation or funeral, as I am at Alden Estates countryside. I broke my ankle back in November, and am still not allowed to put any weight on the ankle.
Know that I am thinking of you.
Sincerely
Jerry Strunk
