Hi,
My name is Chris Spangler; I am the managing editor of the Daily Jefferson County Union here in Fort Atkinson. My husband, Peter, a teacher in Beloit, and I reside at 618 Monroe St. in Fort Atkinson.
I am writing because, on Saturday, we noticed two cars with what appeared to be out-of-state license plates driving by slowly. Pete said it looked as though some former residents were looking at the old neighborhood. I then realized that we had published Raymond Ganser's obituary, and the funeral was today.
As you know, our house, as well as that of Mabel Vogel's next door, was built by the Gansers. The late Wilbur Sundt once told me that he used to play in our side yard, and I believe Raymond was a good friend of his. He also told me that the people who lived in the "farmhouse" to the north used to shoot chickens in our sideyard, and that Gansers bought the lot and cleared it of all the trees and scrub when their neighbors didn't pay their taxes.
I never knew what happened to the Gansers ... when they moved, etc. I believe Wilbur told me that Ray's parents built Mabel's house and then built our house next door, with the same blueprints, for their parents. Wilbur died last year.
Mabel next door is the second owner of the house next door. Last year, she moved to Alden Estates in Jefferson; her kids just rented out the house last month.
We bought 618 Monroe St. from Gary Ziegelbauer in 1989. He had purchased it from Gansers. We recently put a bedroom suite upstairs in the attic after enlarging the dormers. We will be painting in spring. The building in the back of the "extra lot" is a 1,200-square-foot workshop filled with way too much stuff.
We've taken out the wall between the front room and the front bedroom to make a second livingroom of sorts, and hope to remodel the kitchen soon. Right now, though, we still are using the same 1950s stove that the Gansers used, and the kitchen is as it was remodeled by them.
Had I had realized that Ray's funeral was today, I would have invited your families in for a tour. I would love to find out more about the Gansers and the houses here, and if you ever have time, I would love to chat ... in person, phone or via email. I can be reached at cspangler@dailyunion.com or (920) 650-5895.
Please accept our condolences in the loss of your father and grandfather. We never knew him, but every day we appreciate the house that his family built.
We love it here ... 618 Monroe St. was our "starter home," and there is no doubt it will be our "finisher home" as well.
For those who came from far away, have a safe drive back. Again, accept our sympathy for your loss.
Sincerely,
Christine and Peter Spangler.
