Obituary of Norman Edwin Godfrey

Norman E. Godfrey, age 88, died on October 21, 2015, at Fairhaven Retirement Community. Born in Sheboygan, WI on March 16, 1927, he was the son of Norman E. Godfrey Sr. and Florence Hackett Godfrey. Mr. Godfrey attended St. John�s Military Academy in Delafield, WI from which he graduated in 1945 as Lieutenant and Adjutant on the battalion staff. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduation, served for one year, and upon discharge entered the University of Wisconsin from which he graduated cum laude in 1950 with a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy.� While at the university he was affiliated with the Sigma Nu fraternity. In 1950 he met and married Pauline Lois Haraldson, an elementary teacher from Madison, WI. Mr. Godfrey spent two years employed at a pharmacy in Brodhead, WI and two years at a pharmacy in Monroe, WI before purchasing Butcher�s Drug Store on S. Main St. in Fort Atkinson, WI in 1954 and renaming it Fort Pharmacy. Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey operated the pharmacy on S. Main St. for nine years before relocating it to The Old Fort Shopping center, renaming it �The Pharmacy�. In 1964, under the guidance of his wife Pauline, they opened The Little Tea Room in conjunction with the drugstore. In 1988 the store was sold to Snyder Drugs and Mr. Godfrey was employed by them for ten years until retirement. Mr. Godfrey was a member of the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce for many years, serving on several committees, including the Ambassadors where he served one term as president.� He also served one year as chairman of its Retail Committee.� He was on the original Fort Fest board serving one year as its president as well as chairperson of several of its events over time. He was a member of the Fort Atkinson Lions Club and served as its Tail Twister for many years.� He volunteered with First Call for Help driving people to medical appointments and served on the board of Evergreen Cemetery for several terms during which time the Bellman Carillon Tower was constructed.� He also served as the 1945 St. John�s Military Academy class agent. During his time in Fort Atkinson Mr. Godfrey was affiliated with Trinity Lutheran Church where he served several terms on the church council including one term as its president. After his move to Whitewater in 2007 he became a member of The First English Lutheran Church. In addition to his family and his business where he cherished his many former employees and the many years he spent serving his customers, his many interests included skiing, kayaking, biking, tennis, reading, and watching sports. Surviving, besides his wife Pauline, are their daughters, Candice R. Lathrop of Milton, WI,� and Vicki Hitch of Jim Thorpe, PA ; two sons, Thomas Godfrey of Watertown, WI, �and Jeffrey Godfrey of� Macungie, PA; grandchildren Brooke (Aliceson), Jenna, and Jordon Godfrey, Merri (Noel) Pass, Jessica (Hitch) Miller, Jason Hitch, and Amy (Hitch) Anthony:� and ten great grandchildren. Mr. Godfrey was predeceased by his parents, a sister Jean Sarah Druschke. and a brother Robert Allen Godfrey. A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at 1:00pm at First English Lutheran Church, Whitewater, WI. Visitation will be held from 12:30 until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to Fairhaven Retirement Community or Rainbow Hospice.
