Obituary of David Luman Johnson

David Luman Johnson (August 3rd, 1941 - January 31st, 2018) David L. Johnson, age 76, of Cambridge, Wisconsin left this eternal life to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital Community Living Center in Madison, Wisconsin. He was comforted with family by his side. On Saturday, January 27th, David told his daughter that he was ready for the "GRAND FINALE". Earlier in the day on Wednesday before passing away, David also said to his daughter ….."Let's get outta here". David was born on August 3rd, 1941, the son of the late Luman Alexander and Gudrun Sommer (Peterson) Johnson. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1959 and remained in contact and very close with many of his classmates. He served in the United States Navy from 1959-1963 being stationed in San Diego, California. Having the great memory that he did, he still remembered his service number to this day. He drove an 18-wheeler semi truck for most of his life; especially enjoying the road trips out to California. He had his own authority and was self-employed for many years. One of his trucks was named "Blue Lightning" and another "Black Jack". He was so proud to have "Dave Johnson & son" inscribed on the doors of his semi. After being self-employed, he went to work for Wolf Trucking Company in Cambridge up until his retirement in 2006. He truly enjoyed working for Richard and Jody Wolf and so often said to his family "they don't come any better than Richard and Jody". He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and was so excited to see them win the World Series! He would talk to anybody about his Cubbies, the Packers, or any sport for that matter. He and his son shared a love of sports. He would often talk about his Norwegian heritage, which included a very important trip to Norway he took with his mother when he was a young boy. We always enjoyed hearing him say the Norwegian table grace. He loved his many casino trips hoping for the "big win". He loved visiting and talking with the coffee crew & waitresses at the Lake Ripley family restaurant, fellow truckers and could talk for hours with anyone. Everyone loved his curly hair, something he was born with and kept until his time of passing. The nurses complimented him frequently on his awesome hair. David was truly larger than life & a one of a kind guy! He had so many friends and was loved by so many people. This was truly recognized by his family during his illness and up until the time of his death. Blessings to each and every one of you. The family would like to especially thank the entire wonderful staff at Willowbrook Nursing and rehabilitation center in Lake Mills, the Veterans Hospital in Madison and Pastor Dave Sobek for the time spent with family on the day of David's passing. Each and every one of them are true earth angels and cared for David so well. We could not have asked for anything better and will remember this forever. Thank you all! Survivors include his five children, Kim Watters and Ronnie Armstrong of Doniphan, Missouri, Dawn (Steve) Kruchoski of Apache Junction, Arizona, Randy Johnson of Cambridge and Jackie (Don) Frey of Cambridge, his son-in-law Sonny Watters of Madison, seven grandchildren, Ryan Armstrong, Amy Geszvain, Zachary Kruchoski, Chris Armstrong, Cassidy and Noah Frey and Devin Johnson and his wonderful very special friend Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luman and Gudrun (Peterson) Johnson. A visitation will be held at the Nitardy funeral Home, 208 Park Street in Cambridge on Thursday, February 8th from 4-7pm. The memorial service will be held at the Lake Mills Moravian Church, 301 College Street, Lake Mills, WI on Friday, February 9th at 11am with the Rev. Dave Sobek officiating.
