Obituary of Charles W Lemke

Charles W. Lemke age 94 of Fort Atkinson passed away suddenly on November 17, 2017. He was born on July 22, 1923 in Fort Atkinson, WI to Hubert E. and Alma (Peters) Lemke. Charles graduated from Fort Atkinson HS in 1941, and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He attended Milton College for his Bachelor's degree, UW Madison for a Master's degree in Wild Life Management, then University of Michigan for a Master's degree in Public Health. On June 16, 1951 he married Mary E. Roberts at the Methodist Church in Fort Atkinson. Following their marriage they lived in Madison, WI, Verona, WI, Marquette, MI, Rockford, IL, returning to Fort Atkinson, WI in 1991. Charles worked for the Wisconsin State Conservation Department, then as a Statistician/researcher for the Wisconsin Board of Health, Wisconsin Regional Medical Program and Comprehensive Health Planning. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW, American Legion, Friends of Rose Lake, and the Fort Atkinson Historical Society. Charles was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting (especially with his dogs), fishing, birdwatching, downhill and cross country skiing and gardening. As a Conservationist he was restoring his 5 acre parcel of land back to its native prairie. Charles also enjoyed writing articles and letters to the editors of local newspapers. Charles is survived by his wife Mary, 4 children Carol (Doug) Harold of Denmark, WI. Charles Jr. of Salida, CO. Jane (Tom) Dunne of Fort Atkinson, WI. and Peter (Melissa) of Grand Junction, CO. He is further survived by 3 grandchildren Chris Harold of Madison, WI. Jeni Harold of Denver, CO and Camille Lemke of Tacoma, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents. Charles donated his body to the UW Madison Medical School Body Donor Program. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday November 28, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church 314 Barrie St. Fort Atkinson, WI. 53538. Friends may greet the family from 10AM until the time of service. Memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or Friends of Haumerson's Pond (244 N. Main St. Fort Atkinson, WI. 53538) would be appreciated.
