Obituary of Sheila Alice Carmody

Sheila Alice Carmody December 25, 1950- January 21, 2018 Sheila Alice Carmody died peacefully, surrounded by friends and family, in Madison Wisconsin, on January 21 at the age of 67. Sheila was born on December 25, 1950 in Wayzata, Minnesota to Grace Bennett and Thomas Lars Carmody. She grew up on a farm in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. She attended St. Hubert's Catholic School in Chanhassen and St. Margaret's Academy in Minneapolis, as well as the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English. In the 90's, while living in Fresno California she earned her Master's in English Literature. She taught English Literature at University of Wisconsin, Waukesha until her retirement in 2015. She was loved by her students. She married Darrell Pope on June 18, 1983 alongside her dear sister Annie and brother in law Mike. She leaves behind her husband Darrell , son Nathaniel and daughter Vanessa, and her siblings, Maureen Johnson (Terry), Thomas Michael (Patti), Joanne Meierhofer (Thomas), Richard, Mark (Lisa) Patricia Smith (Michael) and Anne Wayman (Michael). She was preceded in death by her son and Nathaniel's twin brother Alexander, her brother James and her parents. Sheila was an accomplished writer, poet, and philosopher. She loved gardening, baking, and long meals with friends and family. Sheila was active in her church, and also volunteered in various organizations over the years, including feeding the homeless in Fresno, sorting clothing in Lake Mills with St. Vincent de Paul, and tirelessly sorting, selling books and advocating for the library with friends of the Lake Mills Library. She was a passionate reader, with thousands of volumes stored in the bookshelves carefully built by her loving husband, Darrell. She leaves behind a legacy of love for the written word and a library that will be donated to various causes. A funeral is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, January 26th at St. Francis Xavier Church in Lake Mills, with a luncheon at church and a reception to follow at 5:30pm at Lewis Station Winery. Friends and family can also come to her burial Monday, January 29th in Minneapolis at Fort Snelling Cemetery 11:05 AM, with a luncheon at Emily's Lebanese Deli (time to be announced). Father David will officiate the ceremony in Lake Mills. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sheila's life. Family and friends will be received for visitation on Thursday at Nitardy Funeral Home, 208 N. Park St, Cambridge from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm and again at the church on Friday from 10:00 am until the hour of mass.
