Obituary of Lillian Mae Sorum

Deerfield- Lillian Mae (Melton) Sorum, age 76, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. She was born April 15, 1932 with her twin brother, Lloyd, to the late Ray and Mildred Melton. Lillian graduated from Cambridge High School in 1951. On July 8, 1953 she married Gerald Sorum and becam a member of St. Paul�s Liberty Lutheran Church. She traveled with Gerald while he was in the United States Army, eventually returning to settle in Deerfield. Lillian worked as a telephone operator until she became a full time Mother to her only child, daughter Kristen. She was a loving, devoted Mother to the very end. Her entire family will miss her dearly, although she will certainly continue to be a loving presence in their lives. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Kristen and Derrick Banes; Grandma�s pride and joy, grandchildren; Noah and Elizabeth, all of Beaver Dam, brothers; Lloyd (Barbara) Melton, Melvin (Nancy) Melton, Clarence (Gloria) Melton, all of Cambridge, Edward (Linda) Melton, of Rockdale, sister; Shirley (Wilson) Manion, of Cottage Grove, sister-in-law; Edna Jacobson, of Deerfield, brother-in-law; Roger Odland, of Deerfield, and many nieces and nephews she loved dearly. She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband; Gerald, brother; Donald Jacobson, sisters-in-law; Loretta Melton, Almira Stenjem, and Alice Odland, brother-in-law; Ernest Stenjem and two beloved nieces; Jody Lillian Volenberg and Annette Hauser. A special thank you to the Deerfield EMT personnel who assisted Mom and St. Mary�s staff for both the respect they showed Mom and the wonderful care she received. Also to Pastor Dan Anderson, not only for his thoughtfulness and prayers during this difficult time, but also his regular visits with Mom which meant so much to her. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday, March 6, 2009, at St. Paul�s Liberty Lutheran Church, 3494 Oak Park Rd, Deerfield. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday morning, 10:00am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul�s Liberty Lutheran Church or to the Arthritis Foundation. God gave us many blessings, Some cherished more than others, but the gifts we treasure all our lives are loving, faithful mothers.
